Earlier this month we had the pleasure of joining a select group of our colleagues to come together and support the teachers of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. When we were approached by Erin of A2 Events about the opportunity to come together and throw a massive end of year celebration, the #msdflamingle, we jumped on it immediately.
After the mass school shooting that took place in February of this year, these teachers had to come together and stay strong for the sake of their students, even on the days they didn’t want to be strong, they did it for the kids. That’s what teachers do. I know I can think of the teachers who impacted me most throughout my years in school, and I’m sure that each of you can think of at least one as well.
It’s sad to say that it’s become almost normal to read news headlines when there is yet another school shooting. I remember hearing about the shooting at MSD in the airport in DC after attending the 10,ooo Small Businesses Summit. I was on a high after listening to headline speakers Warren Buffett, Richard Branson, and Sarah Blakely with more than 4,000 fellow graduates of the 10KSB program, and ended up in tears when I learned of the shooting that was so close to home. Immediately I wrote to friends that I knew lived in the area who have kids in high school, and when my plane landed in Miami I learned that their kids, while okay, attended Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and were witness to the horrible events, having lost many friends that day.
Since that day, I have watched the students and teachers of MSD rise above and finally spark change in this country. It’s what truly inspired me to say yes without hesitation when we were asked to be part of the event to celebrate the amazing teachers who deserved it on so many levels.
A2 Events, thank you for including us, and teachers of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, thank you for allowing us to celebrate you!
